They Will Say I've Been Trying Too Hard is the very first Chris And The Other Girls ALBUM, after releasing Let Go more than a year before... It's the thing that we were working on for almost two years - of course with breaks and everything - but still it was there in my head for quite some time. Drums for example were recorded in the end of 2005 in Bolzano and the pre-production was even made in the summer earlier that year. It took so long, because I somehow felt that I couldn't make it as good as I expected it to be at that time. That's why I kept writing songs, I made the EP first and waited with the album.
To select songs for Let Go was easier, as there were only few songs to choose from and it's not that hard to keep it compact and coherent with 6 songs. When I got to the point of deciding which tracks to select for They Will Say I've Been Trying Too Hard, 24 songs were written, recorded and mixed and I had to let go 9 of them. That was extremely hard: the distance to the material was totally missing as I was so close to the songs, working on them for more than 2 years that I literally waited with the decision till the day I had to send them out to the mastering studio.
So in the end I wouldn't even say that the ›best‹ songs were chosen, but I've tried to make the album compact and somehow felt like leaving the ›mainstreamier‹ songs away, as I just wasn't feeling them as much as I loved the tunes that need some time to develop... The whole process of producing was in between really loving the material and hating it. There were points in the process were I kept listening to songs over and over again as I loved their intensity and there were moments when I felt like throwing away everything... That was the same with Let Go, but it was worse with They Will Say, I just think we spent too much time working on the album. I like the outcome, but the making just took too much time and made me go crazy at some point. Give the record a chance, it's my heart :-)
